Sometimes less is more

07/14/2018

Gujarat has always been a truly vibrant state - or I should say a complete combo for travelers like me. It has everything to offer in terms of culture, heritage, archeological sites, deserts, beaches and the mouth watering vegetarian food.

And on the top of that we all have watched those popular Gujarat Tourism ads where Mr. Bachchan used to explain interesting facts about heritage, cultural and religious sites in Gujarat. So, Gujarat was always on the top in my list but I didn't get the chance to visit there until 2019.

In June 2019, fortunately I got an offer from a product based company in Ahmedabad after a series of dramatic events and I finally joined it. So now I was in Gujarat - the state I always wanted to explore.

Solo Travelling

Now I was just waiting for November to visit Rann of Kutch because the Govt of Gujarat organize Rann Utsav only in winter season (Nov to Feb). But as they say

"That a man who goes alone can start today, but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready."

I was tired of accommodating other people and then their last minute cancellations. I didn't want to miss this chance at any cost. So, I decided to travel alone and that too the whole belt of Kathiawar region bordering the Arabian Sea not just the Rann of Kutch.

Diu : Limestone cliffs, rocky covers and sandy beaches

Diu was my first stop. I took a sleeper bus from Ahmedabad and reached early morning at Diu bus stand. Here I rented a two wheeler for a day. Later that day, I visited Ghoghla Beach, Goa Fort, Naida Caves, Nagoa Beach and Gangeshwar Temple.

The Diu Fort was built by Portuguese in 14th Century. It gives a magnificent view of the Arabian sea. The fort was used by the Portuguese as a strategic military point. It also houses a lighthouse in its compound. And has some cannons as well. Nagoa beach an important landmark in Diu. The beach is blessed with white sand and an ideal spot if you want to soak in some sun.

Somnath: One of the oldest and most revered temple

The next stop was Somnath, which is a pilgrim center and is home to first among the 12 Jyotirlingas of India. I arrived at Somnath in the evening by a local bus. Here I stayed at Somnath Trust Guest House, it was cheap and comfortable stay. After taking bath, I rushed for a glimpse of the deity, and then hurried to get a sight of the sun setting behind the temple. The sun set was magical. There was a light show around 8 PM which is must see as they explain the history of the temple in a simple and unique way.
